Headshots for Mature Professionals.

Is there anything unique about headshots for MATURE professionals?

As a mature professional myself, and having photographed quite a lot of other mature professionals, it’s clear to me that there certainly are a few unique areas.

There’s the fact that some senior pros have very little time for a photo shoot. Your photographer must be able to work with the time allotted.

Some, maybe many, senior professionals feel a bit self-conscious about getting photographed. I mean we all have wrinkles or maybe a few extra pounds. Day-to-day it’s not a big deal, but when you put me in front of the camera, there’s proof!

Kidding aside, that can be really stressful and it affects many of us, especially women because of our societal double-standards. Which are getting better, but we’re not all the way there yet.

One thing your photographer can do is to use lighting and camera angles artfully to give you a flattering appearance.

The other major option is retouching – or using Photoshop to modify or enhance your images.

Every professional photographer retouches the photos they create. But the real question is how much?

Retouching is a technical craft, but there’s also an art to it and that requires taste and good judgment, especially with senior professionals.

My philosophy on retouching is to first, ask my client about their preferences and go from there.

I’ve found that when I ask most mature professionals if it’s okay to make them look a few years younger and a few pounds lighter, they don’t seem to mind that at all.

No matter what, any retouching must look completely natural. My approach is to simply soften and minimize, but not erase, any distractions that remove attention from the eyes because that’s where the connection happens.

Special Considerations for Mature Professionals When Getting a Headshot

Getting a professional headshot is important for any career stage, but mature professionals often have unique needs and preferences to ensure their photos reflect their experience and professionalism. Here are some key considerations for mature professionals when getting their headshot taken.

  1. Emphasizing Professionalism and Authenticity

Mature professionals typically want their headshots to convey credibility and authenticity. This can be achieved by:

  • Classic Styling: Opting for a timeless look rather than following trends.
  • Authentic Representation: Avoiding heavy retouching that can make the image look unnatural.
  1. Using Appropriate Lighting and Retouching

Proper lighting and subtle retouching are crucial for mature professionals. These techniques help present the best version of themselves without altering their natural appearance.

  • Soft Lighting: Using soft, flattering light to minimize shadows and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Subtle Retouching: Enhancing the image slightly to reduce minor imperfections while maintaining authenticity.
  1. Selecting the Right Wardrobe and Accessories

Choosing the right clothing and accessories can significantly impact the final image. Mature professionals should consider:

  • Tailored Clothing: Wearing well-fitted, classic attire in neutral or solid colors.
  • Minimal Accessories: Keeping accessories simple and elegant to avoid distractions.
  1. Guiding Poses and Expressions

A relaxed yet professional pose, combined with a genuine expression, can enhance the impact of a headshot. Photographers can assist with:

  • Natural Posing: Encouraging poses that are comfortable and flattering.
  • Engaging Expressions: Capturing warm and approachable expressions through conversation and rapport.
  1. Choosing an Appropriate Background and Setting

The background of the headshot should complement the subject without overpowering them. Mature professionals might prefer:

  • Simple Backgrounds: Using neutral or slightly blurred backgrounds to keep the focus on the subject.
  • Professional Settings: Choosing settings that subtly reflect their profession or personal brand.
  1. Considering Hair and Makeup

Professional hair and makeup can enhance a mature professional’s appearance, ensuring they look polished and well-rested.

  • Natural Look: Opting for a natural makeup style that enhances features without looking heavy.
  • Groomed Hair: Ensuring hair is neatly styled and, if colored, consistent to avoid roots showing.
  1. Highlighting Health and Wellness

Looking and feeling your best is important on the day of the shoot. Mature professionals should:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to the shoot.
  • Rest Well: Getting a good night’s sleep to reduce puffiness and dark circles.
  1. Working with an Experienced Photographer

Choosing a photographer who has experience working with mature clients can make a significant difference. They will understand the nuances of:

  • Lighting Techniques: Using lighting that flatters mature skin.
  • Posing Guidance: Offering poses that convey confidence and professionalism.

By considering these factors, mature professionals can ensure their headshots accurately reflect their experience, personality, and professionalism, helping them to make a strong impression in their careers.

Retouching Considerations for Mature Professionals Getting Headshots

When it comes to professional headshots, mature professionals often have specific preferences regarding retouching and using Photoshop. The goal is to achieve a polished yet authentic look that reflects their experience and credibility. Here are some key considerations.

  1. Subtlety in Retouching

Mature professionals generally prefer subtle retouching to maintain their natural appearance. The focus should be on enhancing their features without making drastic changes.

  • Minor Imperfections: Softening fine lines and blemishes while preserving the skin’s natural texture.
  • Natural Look: Avoiding heavy-handed edits that can create an unnatural, overly smooth appearance.
  1. Maintaining Authenticity

Authenticity is crucial for mature professionals who want to convey trust and credibility. Retouching should enhance their image without compromising their true look.

  • Realistic Edits: Making sure the final image still looks like the person in real life.
  • Avoiding Over-Editing: Keeping edits minimal to prevent an unrealistic portrayal.
  1. Skin Smoothing

While some skin smoothing can be beneficial, it should be done carefully to avoid a plastic or artificial look.

  • Texture Preservation: Retaining some skin texture to ensure a natural appearance.
  • Fine Lines: Reducing the prominence of wrinkles without completely eliminating them.
  1. Balancing Professionalism and Enhancement

Professionalism should not be compromised by excessive retouching. The goal is to look professional and polished, not artificially youthful.

  • Minor Enhancements: Enhancing features like eyes and teeth subtly to brighten the overall image.
  • Consistent Edits: Ensuring edits are consistent with the individual’s professional brand and image.
  1. Highlighting Natural Features

Emphasizing natural features helps in presenting a genuine and relatable image.

  • Eyes and Smile: Brightening the eyes and teeth slightly to enhance engagement.
  • Hair and Makeup: Ensuring hair looks neat and makeup enhances rather than alters natural features.
  1. Avoiding Drastic Changes

Drastic changes can undermine the authenticity and professionalism of the headshot. Edits should be minor and complementary.

  • Facial Structure: Avoiding changes that alter the face’s natural structure.
  • Weight and Shape: Steering clear of edits that significantly alter the body’s appearance.
  1. Ethical Considerations

Mature professionals may have ethical concerns about retouching. The edits should respect their values and professional integrity.

  • Transparency: Being clear about the level of retouching applied.
  • Honesty: Maintaining honesty in representation to build trust with clients and colleagues.
  1. Communicating Preferences

Clear communication with the photographer is essential to ensure the final images meet the client’s expectations.

  • Discussing Retouching Levels: Having a conversation about what kind of retouching is acceptable.
  • Reviewing Samples: Looking at examples of retouching styles to find the right balance.

By considering these factors, mature professionals can achieve headshots that present them at their best while maintaining authenticity and professionalism. The right balance in retouching helps create a compelling and trustworthy image that supports their career and personal brand.
